New Zealand. Even if you have visited before – it’s never been like this. From the sparkling harbour city of Auckland we set out to explore some of the North Island’s most spectacular destinations.

Get up close (but not too close) to the otherworldly geothermal landscapes of Rotorua. Sail beautiful Lake Taupō to view the spectacular Māori rock carvings. Tour Art Deco Napier on a train that isn’t really a train. Have lunch in a real rail yard, meet the volunteers and see just what it takes to run steam trains. Discover quirky Wellington with its well known art and café culture. This adventure is so much more than a rail tour.

However – our highlight will be when steam locomotive Ja1271, built in 1956, hauls our heritage train from Paekākāriki to Whanganui, Ohakune, Hamilton and Waiuku. Settle back as you take in deep canyons, travel over soaring viaducts, through rolling pasture and view the spectacular sight of lofty volcanoes such as the legendary Ruapehu.

You’ll enjoy the easy camaraderie that comes from travelling aboard your very own train. With comfortable seating, a lounge car and even an open air viewing car, you’ll spend four days taking in the sights and sounds of the North Island in the most unique and thrilling way possible.
