Ponant Antarctica 2020
Ponant Antarctica 2020 – sail in the wake of these great Antarctic explorers during a 16-day polar expedition voyage aboard L’Austral. Fully escorted by Cruise Express Director, Hardy Schneider, your journey will begin in Buenos Aires with a flight to Ushuaia, the Argentinian capital in the Tierra del Fuego region, offering breathtaking landscapes.
In Ushuaia you’ll board the luxurious L’Austral. After crossing the famed Drake Passage, your ship will make its way to the southernmost frozen continent of Antarctica. This extreme environment where nature reigns supreme will reveal to you its most beautiful secrets. Throughout your adventure in this icy realm, you will find yourself in the heart of spectacular landscape in subtle shades of blue and white, surrounded by exceptional wildlife.
Gentoo, Adelie and Chinstrap penguins, Humpback whales, and giant petrels are at home here, as are Elephant and Fur seals, Antarctic Minke whales, and Orcas. Depending on which sites you will visit, you may get the chance to observe them in their untouched natural environment.
Each day, based on ice conditions, the Captain and the Expedition Leader will suggest Zodiac® outings or landings to discover the infinite riches of the Antarctic Peninsula. Glaciers, ice floe, tabletop icebergs, mountain peaks that plunge into the sea, volcanic beaches, research stations, enchanting bays, and vestiges of the whaling industry.
You will then head off across the south Atlantic to discover South Georgia, a region formed by an underwater mountain chain that extends from the Andes to the Antarctic Peninsula. You might get the chance to discover the majestic glaciers of Gold Harbour and the vast plains of Fortuna Bay. If you are fortunate enough to land at Salisbury Plain, you can expect a wonderful spectacle: more than 300,000 King penguins which have taken up residence there.
Your arrival in the city of Montevideo in Uruguay will mark the end of your trip. Situated on the far southern tip of Uruguay, Montevideo is one of the loveliest capital cities of South America.
