The Wild Atlantic Way – Optional tours for a small additional fare – For those wanting to explore the wonderful coastal scenery of Ireland you can choose optional trips along the Wild Atlantic Way. Passengers taking this option will travel by coach around the Ring of Kerry and then along the southern route to Kinsale where they will have a couple of hours to explore before joining the rest of our passengers at Cork for the return by steam to Killarney. Dining passengers will enjoy dinner on this train.

4 SEP Fly from Australia to Dublin.
5 SEP Dublin – transfer to your hotel
Overnight: The Alex Hotel (or similar)
6 SEP Dublin to Killarney – Leaving Dublin around midday, steam-hauled straight from the city centre, you’ll steam right across to the southwest corner of Ireland to the wonderful cathedral city of Killarney where you will be staying for the next two nights. Hauled by the magnificent Irish Express passenger locomotive No. 85 Merlin, you’ll be treated to wonderful views of the verdant countryside while enjoying a light lunch and cream tea on the train. Dinner tonight is at your hotel.

Overnight: Pullman – Aghadoe Heights Hotel (or similar); Premier – The Lakes Hotel (or similar) (B,L,D)

7 SEP

KillarneyOptional trip to Cork or Kinsale

Option 1: Enjoy an optional trip by steam to the South East of Ireland and spend 3 to 4 hours exploring the city of Cork or Kinsale before returning to Killarney. Enjoy a light lunch and dinner on the train.

Option 2: Wild Atlantic Way. If you’d like to take in more of the wonderful coastal scenery of Ireland – this option will travel by coach around the Ring of Kerry and then along the southern route to Kinsale where you will have a couple of hours to explore before joining the train at Cork for the return by steam to Killarney. Enjoy dinner on the train.

8 SEP

KillarneyLimerick and Galway – After your two nights in Killarney – leave by steam after breakfast still hauled by Merlin and head for the poetically famous city of Limerick where the train will change engines to the famous No. 4 Tank Engine. Despite its diminutive size the locomotive has proved capable of speeds well in excess of 60 mph both forwards and backwards! After lunchtime in Limerick travel along the recently rebuilt line through Ennis to the West Coast city of Galway. Dinner will be served in the hotels.

Option: Wild Atlantic Way. For those who wish to see more of the Wild Atlantic Way leave at Limerick and enjoy a trip by coach along the coastal route to Galway where you will rejoin the other passengers in our hotels.

9 SEP

Galway – Today there are no railway excursions. You have a day at leisure in Galway to visit the cathedral, museums and art galleries. Alternatively, you may wish to take one of the optional trips out which will include a trip to the Cliffs of Moher (Ireland’s most visited natural attraction), a boat trip to the legendary Isles of Aran (weather permitting).

10 SEP

Galway

Option 1: Tank No. 4 takes you on a day trip to the far northwest Coast of Ireland at Westport. Unspoilt scenery and spectacular views are the order of the day as you speed across the Emerald Isle. Enjoy a light lunch and dinner on the train.

Option 2: Wild Atlantic Way. Travel by coach in the morning before meeting up with the rest of the passengers at Westport and then experiencing the Tank locomotive in action as it races back across the country to Athlone and then back to Galway.

11 SEP

Galway to Dublin – After breakfast you’ll head west to east across the whole of Ireland back to Dublin, arriving shortly after lunch. Lunch will be served on the train. On arrival in Dublin make your own way to your hotel.

13 SEP Dublin to London – Fly from Dublin to London. Make your own way to your hotel.

14 SEP

London – Full-day tour to Settle & Carlisle Railway. Depart London Euston behind a diesel or electric locomotive to Crewe, where a steam locomotive joins the train for this fantastic journey which curves its way through the Cumbrian mountains. This stunning route never fails to impress, with its dramatic backdrops, beautiful scenery and the many viaducts the train will cross including the famous Ribblehead viaduct.

The steam-hauled sections of this trip are expected to be hauled by a steam engine from a pool of locomotives based in the north of England. This pool of locomotives normally includes 46115 Scots Guardsman, 45699 Galatea, 45690 Leander, 35018 British India Line and Stanier 8F 48151.
