Regarded as one of the world’s greatest rail journeys, this south to north crossing covers 2979 kilometres and provides unparalleled comfort and access to spectacular and diverse landscapes from the pastoral hues of the South Australian plains, remote and breathtaking parts of Australia’s Red Centre and the tropical green of Katherine and Darwin.
In 2019, The Ghan marked 90 years of outback adventure, its legend stemming from the 1930s when the first Afghan cameleers arrived in Australia. The train was then dubbed ‘The Afghan Express’, later shortened to ‘The Ghan’. This train trip offers sumptuous dining, elegant private cabins, attentive service, and the camaraderie of fellow travellers. When the train stops, the adventures begin.
